Younited vs. OneDrive

In last few days I have been wondering what is best cloud storage for me. As I am doing music and also now days I like photography. I took to comparison F-Secures Younited and Microsoft’s OneDrive. I know that there is other cloud storage providers out there like DropBox and Google Drive. But why I selected just these two? Well… To be honest I use Windows Mobile Phone (Lumia 925) and only these two has native client support for it. For others 3rd party applications are just terrible… No writing support, no media player support etc. Also I think these others can not prove anything more than these two.

But now lets look in to these two…

Younited

Younited is F-Secures tryout to cloud storage markets. At the same time they released Younited they took out Online Backup product. Wise choice maybe but it gets me wonder is this a backup software or something else? Well at the moment you open it first-time you notice immediately that it is completely something else. It tries at the same time to be cloud storage, cloud collaboration, backup and organization software. Maybe this is the reason why its UI is so messy. Same time it looks like to be usable on touch screen and mouse… Resolution is that everything looks like little bit too big and same time too small. Also I have noticed that sometimes it has massive performance / latency issues. It just sometimes uses over 90% of disk read/write capacity and sometimes uploads to cloud are just terrible slow. But it does something very well also. Nice feature is that it fetches yours media from DropBox, Facebook and from Picasa. These medias are only read access, but anyway it brings those to same app. This is extremely useful since WMP is lacking good DropBox client. Well you can not write anything to DropBox but at least phone media features work with files. Another good feature is that you can set Younited to fetch files from multiple locations in your computer. In this way you can use it as backup solution. This feature is lacking on other cloud storage solutions. Also there is lot of features like collections and group storage… But those features seems to be little bit under development. Like example you can drag and drop stuff to group storage but if files are updated on cloud they do not get updated in group storage. Also one point must be rise up on Younited, it do not “touch” your files. So if you upload file to cloud and download it in somewhere else you get file as unchanged. This is big bonus for those who do music and/or photo editing! So I would say that there is lot of good stuff going on, but there is also lots of improvement needs around Younited.

OneDrive

OneDrive is Microsoft’s cloud storage platform. One most definitely best feature in it is that it is seamlessly integrated with Windows 8.1 and WMP 8.1. There is no question is it going to work with these… It will. Also it is nicely integrated with almost every MS product. Like Office 2013 you can directly save file to cloud. Once you have OneDrive you do not even want to save you files to local hdd. And if you are offline? No problem you can find your docs from OneDrive “folder” on your computer and those files are always available for you. OneDrive is more classic way of thinking cloud storage. You have client and folder where you can find everything… And this everything is synced to cloud. One annoying feature on OneDrive is that when you want to share something it forces you to go to web interface… You can not do sharing on desktop app. I think you can do sharing on “metro UI” but that is basically another UI to OneDrive web and I think you do not have access your files in offline trough that. But as I earlier said it is basically one folder what is synced to cloud… And no one want to keep all stuff under one folder structure… It will end up complete mess. And you have no option to sync other folders to MS cloud… Unless you use “linking of folders” but that I do not suggest because you will fast lost sense where files actually are and that will cause sooner or later accidentally deletes. Of course one of killer plus on OneDrive is amount of space as free user you get 15 Gb of space and if you are Office 365 user you get 1Tb of space… Yep you read right 1 Tb… That is ~1000 Gb. So there is some annoying features and also it is little bit of old fashion way of thinking, but in other hand you get awesome integration and lots of space.

Summary

Both Younited and OneDrive are good cloud storage services. They both do their part very well. Both are missing stuff and both have some killer features. Sadly I can not tell you which is better because they are so different. I myself end up using them both. I use Younited as my backup software and I keep all my photos and music projects there because Younited keeps them as unchanged. OneDrive has in other hand lot more capacity and way better integration, so I use it as on my daily cloud usage. Every document and every file I ever could need on the go can be stored there and will be accessible from my phone.

So yet again no resolution to that what is best cloud storage solution. Go ahead and try them both (and other cloud storages) and find what combination or solution is best for you!

Very first post…

Yep, this is my very first blog post. Well to be honest this is not my first blog post. I have had few blogs but those has not been very successful on my side. In those days I had so much going on that I really did not have time to write blog. I surely liked to but just did not do it. Well that’s about it…

Now what is going on right now? I have few bands called Deus Deceptor and Hangover Gang. Deus Deceptor is doing its own music and currently we had not released anything but we are in process to make/release our first song. Hangover Gang is playing rock covers of various bands and styles (rock, pop etc). We have made some good gigs in last year and had blast time. Now sadly it seems to go little bit down… Because other band members have a lot of going on their lives (kids, own business etc). But we will see where that goes… I surely keep you updated of my bands in this blog.

Also recently I have growth much of interest in photography. This is classic story… I bought good Nikon camera to my wife so she could take good photos of our dogs… And now when I have been in dog shows with her I must say I really like take good photos. I will post some of my photos here and share a link where you can find more. Lets just hope my wife lets me to use hers Nikon camera 😉

But that is all for now…

PS. And my phone shut down while writing this… Luckily this WorldPress have autosave function… So I did not lose so much writing at this time 😉
